What is an EICR?

An EICR, or electrical installation condition report, is a document created following an inspection of the electrical wiring and equipment in a home. This type of inspection is used to identify any potential hazards and fix them before they become a problem.

Who needs an EICR?

In the UK, it is suggested that all homeowners have an EICR conducted on their property every five years and at least every ten years. (Landlords are legally required to have them undertaken at least every five years) However, even if you're not legally required to have one done, it's still a good idea to get one done periodically as part of your regular home maintenance routine. It can help identify any problems with your electrical system that need attention and could potentially lead to safety hazards.

What happens during an EICR?

During an EICR, your electrician will inspect all of the electrical wiring and equipment in your home. They will look for any potential hazards such as overloaded circuits, frayed or damaged wires, or defective equipment. Once they have identified any issues, they will create a report detailing their findings. This report can be used to help you address any problems with your electrical system and make your home safer.

If you're due for an EICR or are just curious about what one entails, be sure to contact your local electrician for more information. They will be able to answer any questions you have and help you schedule an appointment for your inspection. Having regular EICRs done on your property is a great way to ensure the safety of your home and family. Stay safe and stay informed!

How should I prepare for an EICR?

Be sure to have the following items ready for your EICR:

- Any previous electrical reports or certification for electrical work in the property.

- The address of the person ordering the work (if not the address of the property being inspected)

- The address of the property being inspected.

- A list of electrical work you have had done since the installation was new or since the last inspection.

- A list of anything you do not want us to switch off or we are not going to be able to get access to when undertaking the inspection.

- A list of any specific concerns you may have about your electrical system

- Any plans relating to the electrical system for the property.

Things to do before the inspector arrives

- Make sure there is access to the consumer unit (Fuse box). moving furniture and belongings out the way is a massive help to the inspector especially if the consumer unit is in a cupboard, under the stirs or high up where the inspector will need to put steps to get to it.

- Move furniture and belongings from in front of socket outlets and switching points so the inspector can have access to take the covers off the equipment.

- The inspector will Not be lifting floorboards or going into the loft to inspect cables

- The inspector will only go into the loft if specific equipment is located there like supplies to boilers are located there. (Please inform the inspector when he arrives if this is the case.)

If you have any other questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact your electrician. They will be happy to help! Stay safe and stay informed!
